When one thinks of hypnosis, likely the first image that comes to mind is a monocle-wearing bearded man gently swinging a gold pocket watch in front of someone’s face as he says, “You are getting sleepy … sleepy....” While the word “hypnosis” does, in fact, derive from the Greek ύπνος, meaning “sleep,” and, while a deep state of hypnosis is referred to as “somnambulism,” that is where the relationship between hypnosis and sleep ends. When in a hypnotic state, people are aware and in control of the session, free to accept or reject any suggestion given to them by their hypnotist or hypnotherapist. In fact, they are even able to emerge from hypnosis all on their own, if they so wish.

There are many reasons one might undergo hypnosis, as covered in my website article “Meet Hypnosis: Questions and Answers About This Misunderstood and Miraculous Healing Modality.” And, there are many ways hypnotherapists can use hypnosis to help clients address problematic issues. My preferred method is 5-PATH®, “Five-Phase Advanced Transformational Hypnosis,” which was developed by Calvin Banyan, a former psychotherapist and practicing hypnotist for over twenty years.

What distinguishes 5-PATH® from other hypnosis programs is that 5-PATH® is a well-researched and vetted system, used internationally and across cultures, which primes clients to not only make significant and positive changes in their lives, but to do so for the long-term. 5-PATH® is founded in psychology, medicine, science and professional hypnotism, as developed and practiced by professionals in those fields, such as Gerald F. Kein, Dave Elman, Gil Boyne, Dr. Ivan Pavlov, Dr. Franz Mesmer -- heralded as the “Father of Hypnosis” (think: “mesmerized”) -- and others. 5-PATH® is a coherent system, not a series of “feel good” sessions, the effects of which tend to be short-lived. That is not to say clients do not feel good after their sessions; I have yet to have a client not feel powerful effects from their sessions. What 5-PATH® offers is a much deeper experience: an investigation into why we do not always act in our own best interest, and what we can do to change that, permanently.

Through the use of 5-PATH®, the trained hypnotherapist is able to help their client uncover and address the root cause of the presenting issue while in a state of hypnosis, where meaningful change is able to take hold in the subconscious mind. These insights are then brought into the conscious mind, enabling the client to take steps on a daily basis that ensure the longevity of the desired change.

As a compliment to this cohesive system, I also offer instruction in the self-hypnosis system known as 7th Path®, also developed by Calvin Banyan. Between sessions and beyond, clients practice this healing modality, which is part of the Mind-Body-Spirit field of self-development, enabling them to gain powerful insights in the comfort of their own homes. However, one need not be spiritual or even religious to use 7th Path® to great effect. 7th Path® works on the principle of emotional resonance to help clients neutralize negative thought patterns, thus placing them on a level playing field from which to implement profound and lasting life changes. (See the tab on my website: 7th Path® Testimonials.) In addition to being employed as a compliment to 5-PATH®, 7th Path® can also be used independently as a daily mindfulness practice. The range of experiences of practitioners of 7th Path® is as diverse as the practitioners themselves, but all are benefitted by this practice in ways appropriate to each individual’s personal circumstances.
