For most people, the notion of intuitive readings, or channeling, is unfamiliar, and so it is often misunderstood. This brief article will clarify what intuitive readings can look like, generally, and what they look like when done with me, specifically.

Let me begin by defining a few terms. A “channel” is someone who serves as a conduit for information from an entity or “energetic being” to a “sitter.” A “sitter” is the person who wishes to receive information about their highest good from any of a variety of “energetic beings”, such as their own higher self, Spirit/God/the Universe, or information from a transitioned (most people say, “deceased”) loved one.

Channels who give information about the person’s highest good are generally referred to as “psychics,” while those who channel transitioned loved ones are called “mediums.” There are also channels who are “psychic mediums,” that is, they can do both.

Channels use a combination of what are called “clairs” to receive the transmitted information: clairvoyance (sight), clairsentience (feeling), clairaudience (sound), clairgustance (taste), claircognizance (knowing), and clairalience (smelling).

The energy or entity transmitting the information tunes into the channel’s life experience and natural clair proclivities and then uses her frames of reference and her intuitive strengths to convey messages as clearly as possible. Every channel works slightly differently, and the particular technique and resulting manifestations are dependent upon a host of factors, most significant of which is how the channel is naturally attuned. Just as one can’t force a fish to fly, so, too, one can’t force oneself to be a type of channel other than that which they are naturally inclined to be.

Channels are sometimes in a full-on trance, and so cannot (fully) recall what information they passed onto the sitter, but others are very much aware of what they are saying and doing. Most fall somewhere in between. Some channels work in real time with the sitter, while many opt to solicit the sitter’s goals and questions for the session in advance, and then conduct the reading without the sitter present, providing for the sitter a write-up or recording of the findings afterwards.

Here's something you may not know: Anyone can channel and we all have clairs. In fact, you have probably already used your clairs to channel. You’ve likely had the experience, more than once, where you were thinking of calling a friend and soon thereafter that friend contacted you first. Is it coincidence, or is it that she was subconsciously channeling your thought-energy, receiving from you the fact that you wanted to be in touch? Have you ever just had a gut knowing that something out of the ordinary was going to happen and then it did? Perhaps you’ve sensed something was wrong with a loved one who lives at a distance the instant that they were in an accident or fell ill. Or maybe you’ve smelled the scent of your departed grandmother’s perfume when you were mourning her passing. I believe these are all forms of channeling.

Generally speaking, learning to channel for a sitter requires some consistent training, either formal or informal, in order for one to begin to make sense of what they are receiving, or even to realize that they are receiving in the first place. It is also important to seek expert guidance on how to understand the information received, as well as to practice, practice, practice in order to get to know your own style.

Information can come as literal representations or metaphorical ones, as references from the channelers life experience or as references specific to the sitter’s. Let me give you a brief example. (Specific references have been changed to protect the privacy of the individuals concerned.) I once channeled an energy who turned out to be the sitter’s living relative, though I did not know this until after I had submitted my reading to him. At one point I saw (clairvoyance) a black puppy with long floppy ears and a little girl with long ponytails stroking those puppy’s ears. She could not get enough of those ears. I heard (clairaudience) the word “Spotty,” and sensed I was being sent the concept of a name (claircognizance), rather than a description of the puppy’s appearance. After I had shared the reading with the sitter, he told me that his relative, as a small girl, went through a period where she insisted on wearing a headband that had fuzzy, floppy “puppy” ears. She’d wear them to school, to the playground, in the tub, to bed. So, the puppy ears I saw were metaphorical, while the girl, who incidentally wore her hair in long ponytails, was literal. The sitter then told me that that same little girl’s godparent had recently lost a pet named Spotty.

So, you see, the information comes to channels sometimes very literally, sometimes metaphorically. It all depends on what references in the channeler’s toolbox can be used by the source energy to get the relevant information to the sitter. That’s why it is important for the channel not to interpret the information, and why it is ultimately up to the sitter, not the channeler, to determine what this information means in the context of their life, as well as how they will use it to their benefit and without causing harm.

I have learned that I am a psychic-medium who channels information from or about both living and transitioned beings, as well as from Spirit in its many manifestations. When a client hires me to channel for them, I inquire about their objective in having a reading, and ask them to submit any questions they would like answered or issues around which they would like guidance. This becomes the specific intention for the reading. However, in addition, I set a more encompassing intention: that whatever is in my client’s highest good, whatever it is that my client most needs to know at this time, be revealed. After I channel, I then send my client the results.

If a client wishes to connect with a transitioned loved one, I will ask that loved one to enter into communication with me, however, there is no guarantee they will do so. It is important to understand that in order to connect with a non-physical entity, both the channeler and that entity, i.e. the sender, need to be on the same energetic frequency, and the sender needs to want to participate in the process. Usually, they do, but on occasion they choose not to, and the reasons for this are not always clear. Additionally, channeling requires a lot of work from both parties, as the channeler needs to speed up their vibrational frequency and the sender needs to slow down theirs so that the two will meet somewhere “in the middle.” And while transitioned loved ones who are sought out usually make an appearance, it does happen that a transitioned loved one might not yet be able to do this arduous work, especially if they have transitioned recently, but also if they feel it is in the best interest of their living loved one to hear from sources other than themself.

The bottom line is this. Channeling is completely safe for both the channel and the sitter; it is conducted with respect for the energetic beings who are kind enough to participate in the process; it should always be done with only the best intentions and for the highest good of all concerned; it is a skill we all have; and it is an invaluable experience that has the potential to open the sitter up to information that can help them enhance and empower their life or relieve their grief.
